Roland Folger, managing director and CEO of luxury car manufacturer Mercedes Benz, made a strong case for early adoption of Bharat VI emission norms by manufacturers, aided by the government. Folger, who was interacting with the media in Pune on Wednesday at the launch of the Edition E vehicle, said that such norms would help in tackling pollution and other issues.
This comes after the Supreme Court banned the entry of diesel vehilces with engine capacity above 2 litres in Delhi in view of the chronic pollution problem. Folger said that pushing for petrol vehicles was an easy way out, but it would not solve the problem. Adopting the Bharat VI emission norms and gradual roll out of the same is the best solution, according to Folger.

The present emission norms, prevalent in India, is Bharat IV and the union government has already talked about skipping the Bharat V norms and adopting Bharat VI by 2020.
On Wednesday, Folger also announced the launch of Edition E – the fifth vehicle in the E class family. This launch also marked the 20th year of the launch of the E class in India which has sold 32,000 units in the country. The E 200 ‘Edition E’ is priced at Rs 48.60 lakh, the E 250 CDI Edition E is priced at Rs 50.76 lakh and the E 350 CDI is priced at Rs 60.61 lakh.
At present, the luxury car manufacturer has managed to achieve 60 per cent localisation in its vehicles. Speaking about the Make in India campaign, Folger said things needed to be picked up on ground.
