The Gandhi National Memorial Society (GNMS) observed Gandhi Jayanti on Wednesday by giving away the Ba-Bapu awards at SM Joshi Hall.
The Ba award was bagged by Dr Surendra Saini,a trustee of Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust,Indore.
Dr Raghunath Mashelkar was awarded the Bapu award. Mashelkar is a Gandhian scientist and has edited a book on Gandhi,Timeless Inspirator: Reliving Gandhi,which is a collection of 45 short essays on the Mahatma.
In his acceptance speech,Mashelkar said,I have received many awards,but this is close to my heart. I will add Rs 50,000 to the Rs 1 lakh cash prize,which accompanies the award,and donate it to GNMS.
The Constructive Social Worker Award was bagged by Arun Khore for his writings and service through his NGOs in Solapur and Pune.
The Constructive Social Worker Award for women was conferred upon Minal Tipnis,a social worker,who has worked extensively with orphaned children.
Abhay Firodia,president of GNMS (Pune chapter),said,Our generation had unquestioned reverence for Gandhi. But,the new generation tries to understand his works and principles,and reveres him for his vision.
