Caught between caring for an ailing mother-in-law, supporting a son preparing for his Class X exams and attending to a husband with his own set of concerns, this woman from a village finds herself in a situation so overwhelming that prioritizing her own health feels impossible. Advised by the ASHA worker not to ignore the tumour in her breast, the woman finally finds the strength to break her silence and takes the first step by travelling to the city and beginning her journey to recovery. This simple yet powerful story unfolds in a 25-minute film `Mardowali Baat’ that portrays a woman’s journey toward emancipation.

The premier show of the film produced by Aastha Breast Cancer Support Group Pune and co-produced by Umeed Cancer Support Forum will be held on September 28 at PYC Hindu Gymkhana. Noted gynaecologists Dr Sanjay Gupte and Dr Asmita Gupte are the chief guests on the occasion.

Dr Shekhar Kulkarni , a noted breast-onco surgeon who is well known for his musical, literary pursuits and acted in films like Astu and Nital told The Indian Express has directed the film. “The story revolves around the woman who is so caught up with the routine grind of everyday life and multiple chores that she has to attend to that it leaves little room for her to care for her own well-being,” Dr Kulkarni who is also the writer and lyricist for the film said.

October is globally recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month making the screening of this film particularly timely. It also boosts ongoing efforts to raise public awareness about the importance of early detection. While the focus on medical aspects of the disease is important, Dr Kulkarni said in the film they decided to adopt a different approach, one that explores the emotional journey of those affected. “The story reflects how even when burdened with numerous responsibilities and constraints, the woman’s decision to seek treatment becomes an act of liberation and empowerment,” he said.

Noted actor Ashwini Giri portrays the role of the woman while the cast also includes several practising doctors. Anoop Mehta, Founder of Umeed Cancer Support who is a cancer survivor and co-producer of the film said that the film captures the woman’s struggles in a thought-provoking yet engaging way. “The film conveys a powerful message encouraging women to pay attention to even the smallest change in their bodies and take care of their health needs,” Mehta added.
