The foreign national who allegedly created nuisance by undressing himself on a crowded road is a citizen of Congo and came to India on a student visa, said the Deccan police, who are investigating the case.

The police investigation revealed that he had not consumed liquor or any other intoxicant. Police suspect that he committed the act as he was “disturbed due a failed romantic relationship”.

Senior Police Inspector Ajay Kadam of Deccan police station said the foreign national is from Congo and is studying engineering at a college in Pune. “He was held for causing nuisance on the road and admitted to the psychiatric ward at the Sassoon hospital for treatment on Friday. Later, he was handed over to his friends. No offence was registered in the case. But the incident has been noted at the Deccan police station,” said Kadam.

According to police, the foreigner reached the busy Nalstop junction on Karve Road in an auto-rickshaw at 3.30 pm. He took off his clothes and attacked a few people on the streets, said police.

Police said he even tore off the clothes of a pedestrian and attacked two-wheeler riders who had stopped at the traffic light. Later, he damaged a few private vehicles and then got on a Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) bus, where he tried to attack the passengers, said police.

A group of people surrounded him and managed to bring him under control. They tied him to a pole with a rope and covered him with a piece of cloth.

Police sources said that as per medical reports provided by the hospital, he did not consume any intoxicant.
