An man who had his face covered barged into a restaurant in Kothrud on Wednesday night, whipped out a pistol and fired a shot in the air, creating panic among customers. Police said the man was yet to be identified and that his motive behind the act was not clear. In a similar incident in December 2012,a bullet was fired in another restaurant in Kothrud during day time.
The Kothrud police said the man entered Palkhi restaurant near Karishma Society around 11 pm. His face was covered. He approached the cash counter and abused the manager. He then asked for the owner and took out the country made pistol that he was carrying. He fired a bullet towards the ceiling and walked out of the restaurant. The incident created panic in the restaurant, where a lot of people were still having dinner, said senior inspector Kalyan Vidhate.
Inspector (Crime) S B Navle said: The motive is not clear. The restaurant is run by three partners. One of them,Anand Shetty, has now filed a complaint. We have asked all of them if it could have been due to any kind of rivalry. They have still not received any call for extortion. So,as of now rivalry or extortion do not seem to be the motive. We are working on some clues.
Vidhate said their teams were checking CCTV footage from the cameras installed in nearby areas. We do not know how he had come to the spot, and whether he was alone, he said.
In the similar incident that took place in December,an unidentified person had come on a motorcycle and fired a bullet towards Prithvi restaurant near Dahanukar Colony in Kothrud. Police had suspected extortion to be the motive and also indicated towards the involvement of a notorious criminal in police records.
The Kothrud police said they were probing the two cases separately as of now.
