‘Make helmets compulsory in city’

The Save Pune Traffic Movement (SPTM) on Friday demanded that helmets for bikers be made compulsory in Pune city.

The Save Pune Traffic Movement (SPTM) on Friday demanded that helmets for bikers be made compulsory in Pune city.

Addressing a press conference,Rajendra Sidhaye of SPTM,said, “A survey on road accidents last year found that majority of victims were two-wheeler riders and about 98 per cent of those killed were not wearing helmets.”

The organisation has started an initiative ‘Save 100 Lives’ in the city.

“We want Pune police to announce a date from when wearing helmets will become compulsory. In the meantime,citizens should be asked to arrange for their helmets. The traffic police and the civic body is supporting our initiative and have agreed to be a part of it. We also appeal to the political parties to support our cause,” he said.

SPTM activists Jayant Joshi and Harshad Abhyankar were also present on the occasion. They said proper enforcement of the rule to use seat belts while driving has shown good results. Along with awareness campaigns,proper enforcement of rules will give better results. They said they will also spread awareness through social media.

SPTM also appreciated the helmet rule enforced in Pune Cantonment area.
