Major Shaitan Singh BhatiDespite being outnumbered and ill-equipped for high-altitude warfare, 120 Indian soldiers held off an assault by over 2,000 Chinese troops, showcasing unparalleled bravery.

The courage and sacrifice of Major Shaitan Singh Bhati and his men during the 1962 Indo–China War were remembered in a heartfelt tribute organised by Aseem Foundation in Pune.

The event featured a drama, a survivor’s firsthand account, in honour of the families of war heroes. The tribute focused on the legendary defence put up by Charlie Company of 13 Kumaon Regiment at Rezang La near Pangong Lake. Despite being outnumbered and ill-equipped for high-altitude warfare, 120 Indian soldiers held off an assault by over 2,000 Chinese troops, showcasing unparalleled bravery.

The event’s highlight was a dramatic retelling of the battle titled Rezang La: Ek Bhooli Hui Dastaan by Amit Vaze and his team. The programme was attended by 93-year-old Brigadier (retd) RV Jatar, a survivor of the battle. The war veteran shared a firsthand account of the historic event during an interview with Dr Sarang Gosavi, President of Aseem Foundation.

The brigadier recounted how the 13 Kumaon Regiment’s efforts safeguarded the Chushul airstrip, a critical supply point in Ladakh. The war ended in November 1962. Reflecting on the aftermath of the battle, he said, “The perfectly preserved bodies of these 120 brave hearts were found in their battle–ready positions only in February 1963.” The soldier also shared a personal anecdote about the Major, describing him as a shy and introverted individual who excelled in football during younger days. “On the field, however, he was an excellent and brave officer who held up the highest traditions of the Indian Army,” he added.

Major Shaitan Singh was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra for his heroic actions during the battle. Brig Jatar recalled how Singh, gravely injured, ordered his soldiers to leave him behind and return to their positions to continue the fight.

The programme also commemorated Lt Gen SS Hasabnis’s father, Lt Col Shrikant Sitaram Hasabnis, who was captured as a prisoner of war while fighting alongside Major Dhan Singh Thapa (PVC). Lt Col Hasabnis’s widow, Sujata Hasabnis, was felicitated for her resilience during his captivity and for inspiring her younger son to join the Indian Army. The event included a felicitation for the cast and crew of Rezang La: Ek Bhooli Hui Dastaan and acknowledgments for organisations like Casuarina, which supported Aseem Foundation’s National Integration Park project in Bhor.

Military dignitaries including Lt Gen LG Patankar, Lt Col Deepak Agashe, Brig Ajit Apte, and Major Shrikant Gore attended the programme. Major Gore, currently serving in 13 Kumaon Regiment, expressed his pride in the initiative, stating, “It is heartening to see such efforts to keep the memory of our fallen heroes alive.”
