On June 16,when city-based Subhash Mantri spoke to his parents around 11.30 in the night,he did not know he will be cut off from them the next few days or of the hardships his parents were facing in Uttarakhand. His parents,Ramprakash Mantri (60) and Sharda Mantri (56),were on a pilgrimage to Uttarakhand and had reached Uttarkashi on June 15.

It was three days before the family got a call from a mobilephone, borrowed from someone, informing them that the couple had climbed a mountain to save themselves and had got lost in the forests. They spent three days in the forest without food or water.

Recounting the events, Subhash said,“We desperately tried their phone the whole day but couldn’t reach them. We even searched for the helpline numbers on internet and television, but couldn’t get any information.”

Subhash (32),who runs a pharmacy company in Pune, added that on June 18,one of their relatives who happened to know someone in a Uttarakhand village called Netala, called them to inform Netala Police Chowki had the Mantri couple’s name. However,he couldn’t give any information on their whereabouts.

“We saw updates on television. That’s when my brother and I booked a flight to Delhi. On June 19,when we were at the Pune airport,we got a call from an unknown number. It was my parents calling. They had borrowed someone’s phone to call us. We burst into tears,” recalls Subhash,a resident of Ganesh Garden in Bibwewadi.

In the short conversation over the phone,Subhash learnt that to escape the flood, the couple had climbed a mountain and had somehow got lost in a forest near Netala. “They told us that for three days, they didn’t get a drop of water or a morsel of food. My parents were sounding very shocked and scared and so we did not probe further. They asked us not to come to Delhi,so we cancelled our flight tickets,” said Subhash, who, along with his brother and sister,is eagerly waiting for his parents’ return. The Mantri couple told their son they were airlifted by a helicopter from Netala to Guptakashi. They were brought to Haridwar by road. The couple is expected to reach Pune on Sunday.
