Two half-century stands shared by Amar Lonkar propelled Pune Police to a huge total before they beat Tech Mahindra by 25 runs to win their Group B league match in the ABIL Inter Corporate Cricket Champions Cup at the Deccan Gymkhana Ground.
Put in to bat,Pune Police was propped up by the belligerent opener Lonkar,who remained unbeaten on 73 after having faced 52 balls and struck six fours and a six. For the first wicket,Lonkar and Amit Bodare (47) put on 67 runs in 45 balls and then Lonkar added 69 runs for the second wicket with Mukund Pawar (20). Later on,Abhijit Ekshinge played a cameo scoring 24 not out in 12 balls with three fours and one six.
In reply,Tech Mahindra got off to a strong start thanks to Madhu Kamat (76) and Rohan Manekar (44) as they added 58 runs for the first wicket. After the fall of Manekar,Kamat compiled 52-run stand with Sushant Modani,but his efforts were curtailed as Pune Police kept a tight leash on runs towards the end.
In the first match of the day,Infosys defeated Trigon Consultants by six wickets in a Group C match. Put in to bat,Trigon Consultants managed to make only 104 for eight in the allotted 20 overs with Prashant Kharade scoring 35. Krishna Pawar and Dilraj Bhatia snapped two wickets each.
Chasing the modest target,Infosys were steered by Gaurav Singh (32) and Vaidhav Mahadik (31) as they reached the target with seven overs to spare. Gaurav Singh and Mahadik had come together after two wickets had fallen but they took control of the situation compiling 52 runs in 38 balls for the third wicket.
Santosh Upadhye struck four late wickets as Sakal Group defended gamely to win their first Group D league match beating Cognizant by 39 runs.
Put in to bat,Sakal Group was propped up by Vinayak Bawadekar (34) and Ashwin Bhosale (27).
In reply,Cognizant was carried through by Puneet Karan (65 not out). Upadhye ran through Cognizant batting order to hand Sakal Group a handsome win.
In the second match of the day,Vistacore piled up 206 for 5 in 20 overs after Virag Awate (57) and Amey Soman (55) put on 119 runs for the first wicket stand.
When KPIT began their chase,heavy showers forced them to retreat back to pavilion. When the match resumed the target set for them was 75 runs in 6.5 overs,but they could only manage 59 for the loss of three wickets.
