The helmet compulsion rule within the Pune Cantonment limits was imposed stringently on Friday after the Local Military Authority (LMA) took a lenient stand till Thursday.

On Friday, bikers not wearing helmets were not allowed to enter the Cantonment at three locations, including the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) gate and the RWITC junction.

Colonel P V Mohan,Adm Commandant,Pune Sub-Area said the rule will be implemented across the cantonment area and adhered to from September 13 when the Quick Response Teams (QRTs) will be stationed at various points along with military police and the local police.

“There was resistance from people on some occasions given that some were rushing to work. But with a few exceptions such as in case of patients,we stopped people and turned them back if they were not wearing helmets. In general, the effect of the rule can be seen with many people wearing helmets while passing the Cantonment area,” Mohan said.

Meanwhile,a press release issued by the Press Information Bureau,Ministry of Defence said,“The drive undertaken by HQ Pune Sub-Area to create awareness regarding wearing of helmets among Puneites, while riding two-wheelers has gained momentum due to concerted efforts by the the Pune Traffic Police and Army Authorities. On Thursday, students of St Vincent’s High School participated in the awareness drive and encouraged people travelling by two-wheelers to wear helmets.”
