‘Let there be no barriers for those wanting to be classical dancers’

Nikhil Rajendra Birmal, a kathak dancer for the past five years under the guidance of “Nadyogi kathak academy” had embarked on the journey inspired by “the sublime pleasure of dance”. Ahead of the new year, Nikhiol wishes for the elimination of barriers to entry for those who want to be classical dancers.

Nikhil while choosing kathak as his profession, faced struggles in finding a good guru till he met Guru Girish dada. His next step was transforming his physique as he was too skinny. The form of dance demands high energy and as such he devoted himself to a proper diet and lifestyle.

Balancing a full-time profession with his artistic pursuits was not an easy feat. Nikhil, a Sanskrit teacher at a school, walks the tightrope as he takes out time for dance practice while pursuing his profession as well.

Looking ahead to 2024, Nikhil says that rather than representing big platforms he wishes for the elimination of the barriers and taboos for those who want to be classical dancers, especially to male dancers. “Students who are interested in learning classical dance should be provided this training at the school level only. This will ensure the art grows with its purity in the dance form.

“What I am hoping for in the new year is for a resurgence of interest and support for classical dance in the coming year,” he said.
