Leslie Lewis pairs with second-generation singers for his new EDM album

Whether it was fusing pop with classical music through Colonial Cousins or remixing golden Bollywood classics with electronic music for Rahul and I,an album in collaboration Asha Bhosle, the audience has seen Leslie Lewis bring new sounds to the music scene. Keeping up with his reputation for innovation,Lewis recently announced his latest album, which is based on electronic dance music (EDM).

“People would think that EDM is something new that I want to try,but I was there when EDM was just being introduced to the worldwide music industry. Years later,I even worked on remixing Hindi songs with EDM,which widely came to be known as club music. You might just say I am a dinosaur,I’ve been around for that long,” says Lewis,as he talks about working with a brigade of young musicians and vocalists for his upcoming album.

Yet untitled, the album features Lewis singing with his daughter Divya as well as children of his colleagues Shankar Mahadevan,Loy Mendosa,Hariharan and Kavita Krishnamurthy. “It is a very special album. I have sung with Hariharan for so long and now I will be singing with his sons Akshay and Karan,” says Lewis.

Akshay Hariharan has released an album and is presently working as a music director for a Marathi production by Mahesh Manjreker. While 12-year-old Shubham Mahadevan has already lent his voice for a song, his brother Siddharth has made his debut in collaboration with his father’s trio and the composer duo Salim-Suleman for a devotional album. Now,they will be seen working together on a song with Lewis. Mendosa’s 23-year old daughter Alyssa has sung Bollywood hits such as Uff teri adda from Karthik Calling Karthik and Khaabon ke parinday for Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Vilonist L Subramanium and Kavita Krishnamurthy’s son Ambi and daughter Bindu have also launched their debut albums and are now gearing up for a song in collaboration with Lewis. His own daughter, who composes music as well as plays various musical instruments, debuted on stage with Lewis during an episode of Coke Studio @ MTV that was aired in 2011.

“They are not kids anymore, they have matured into professional musicians, vocalists and composers. Though they have done commendable work earlier, none of them have worked with EDM. I want to take them out of their comfort zone and do something new,” he says.

Lewis will be performing at High Spirits,Koregaon Park,on Friday,9 pm onwards. “I want to connect with my audience through the stage again and the best way to do that is to go unplugged,” says Lewis. He will be performing his original tracks along with rock versions of his Bollywood work.

“My audience has not heard the real Leslie Lewis yet. Through the gigs and the album, they will be introduced to the real me,in fact, the various sides of me,” he says.
