The tiny Sandwich Corner has been providing many Puneites a quick bite at dirt cheap prices from its vantage location at Bata Chowk

On any given day,if you are strolling on M G Road,it’s a given that you would miss the six feet by four feet shop named Sandwich Corner on Bata Chowk. Owned by Gautam Pillai, the tiny joint will soon turn six years old; over half-a-dozen years of its existence,it has been satiating the cravings of many a city foodie-cum-shopaholics. “We see a lot of business on weekends, because that’s when most people frequent M G Road. On weekdays, though there are customers, our main earnings are essentially done over the weekends,” informs Pillai, who mans the shop single-handedly,while an assistant does the errands.

“I used to work in a soft drink company previously. After taking retirement I started my own transportation business. However, when even that did not work out well,I set up this sandwich joint six years ago,” says Pillai, one of whose friends let him make use of the vacant space, which now houses the shop. “Before this,I’d no experience of making food, leave alone setting up a business venture associated with it,” he adds.

For someone with no previous experience in making and vending food,Pillai offers a delicious array of choices. There’s a choice of Tomato,Chutney,Tomato Cheese,Veg Cheese,Plain Veg and Plain Cheese Sandwiches (priced between Rs 12 and 20); Solkadi,Kokum Sharbat,Lime Soda and Lime Juice,Coffee (priced between Rs 8 and 15) and the latest offering of Kachchi Dabeli and Cheese Dabeli (priced between Rs 7 and 10). “Even though I’ve got limited space to function out of,I ensure that all my sandwiches and beverages are made hygienically and are tasty. Recently,I’ve added Kachchi and Cheese Dabeli at very reasonable prices since it’s a favourite with Puneites.”

Armed with a mini-stove,an assortment of chutneys, butter and cheese, along with fresh bread,Pillai gets down to doing what he knows best, everyday from 11 am to 2.30 pm and between 5 and 9 pm. The USP of Sandwich Corner being quick, efficient and hygienic service, this tiny shop, which is totally inconspicuous when compared to other eateries nearby, stands out for being one of the few places where you can order a quick bite and be well on the way to your next favourite shop, faster than you can say,“One double-decker cheese sandwich please.”
