The PMC-run dog pound, near Naidu Hospital, will have a new managing team from Wednesday. As reported by The Indian Express on November 9,the Standing Committee of the PMC had sanctioned the tenders of three animal organisations-Animal Protection Society,Karad,Animal Rights Fund,Bengaluru and SPCA,Latur-Udgir to look into the management of the pound. This was done a month after the contract of the last managing organisation – VSWARD (Hyderabad) expired in October.

“One of the organisations,SPCA,will start its work of managing the pound from today itself. After a week or two,the other two agencies will work at the zonal level and will operate on the dogs as per the CNVR (Catch Neuter Vaccinate Release) guidelines,” said Dr Dilip Jagtap, assistant health officer,PMC.

For the last month, dog lovers and city-based animal organisation volunteers as well as members of the animal welfare board have been working together to manage the pound and look after the dogs there. “The Blue Cross Society Pune has also been performing operations and taking in injured dogs as per availability of space. Other volunteers and animal lovers have also been working together for the welfare of the dogs,” added Jagtap.
