On the occasion of Gudi Padwa on Thursday,Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar inaugurated Vishwashanti Sangeet Kala Academy (VSKA),a new music institute at Rajbaug in Loni Kalbhor, which is around 20 km from Pune.
Except for singer Asha Bhosale, the event was attended by all the Mangeshkar siblings Usha Mangeshkar,Hridaynath Mangeshkar and Meena Khadikar.
Speaking on the occasion,Vishwanath Karad, founder of Maharashtra Institute of Technology, said,“There is an immense need for such an institute today as arts is a source of happiness.” The institute will be headed by Adinath Mangeshkar, son of Hridaynath Mangeshkar.
One of the striking features of the academy is its grand structure – with each building comprising a dome-shaped roof. Each of the domes is linked to corridors and passages, all forming an attractive circular pattern. The domes represent the seven notes of the musical octave — Sa,Re,Ga,Ma,Pa,Dha,and Ni while the central dome represents an “aum”.
Lata Mangeshkar, who inaugurated the event by playing the rudraveena, said that she had made an exception this time by attending a public event. Addressing the audience, she said she sang better than she spoke and belted out a few Sanskrit verses.
Sarod exponent Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, his wife Dr Vijay Bhatkar, historian Babasaheb Purandare, musician Fariduddin Dagar and Annasaheb Dange were also present.
Vishwashanti Sangeet Kala Academy has been established by World Peace Centre (Alandi),MIT.
