With women no more hesitating to holiday on their own,all-women tours are quite in demand this summer
Varna Honnavar,25,is just back from a short trip to Ladakh, where she trekked, relaxed and generally had a good time. The only difference was she traveled not with family but with a group of women, all strangers.
Honnavar is not alone,as travelling with a group of women is catching up big time in the city. Needing a respite from the cares of looking after a family or giving your best to a demanding job,the fairer sex is exploring travel opportunities which provide a much-needed break from the grind and yet make for a wholesome travel experience. I have a really hectic work schedule. And taking a break becomes necessary after a while. Thats when I take off on these tours, sometimes alone and sometimes with a couple of friends, says Honnavar,a marketing professional. Going out with an all-women set is a huge change and complete fun, she adds.
From leisure trekking events and adventure camps to just plain relaxation,a whole range of holiday options are available for women looking for an outing with a difference. Realising the business opportunity which lies just waiting to be explored in this scenario, some travel companies have come up customised tours for women. Ever since we started these special travel plans for women in 2006,weve seen a great response. While we had planned to take on board only 40 women for our first trip to Thailand,we were flooded with requests and had to finally accommodate around 300 women, says Zelman Choubal, director,Kesari Tours. My Fair Lady, the customised tour for women travelers, has already been to Singapore,Thailand,Malaysia in the past and this summer,we have planned tours to Switzerland and Europe. We want women to have a really memorable time while on a trip through My Fair Lady, she adds.
The fetish for travel has become so pronounced that even the cyberspace is now playing host to several such ventures. One such online group is Women on Clouds, which is quite popular on Facebook. Informs Shirin Mehra, director,Women on Clouds,Women have traditionally traveled with family and even then, theyve been busy taking care of others. So,the idea behind Women on Clouds was to make these short trips a time when they could unwind and relax, with nobody to take care of.
A woman on cloud could be single or married, with a husband who is either too busy or not into travel, says Mehra. She could be a homemaker who wants to experience independence and wants to prove to herself that she can do it; or perhaps she needs to get away — too much stress, too many pressures at home or at work,an unexplained need to turn her back on life for a time; or maybe shes a woman who just simply loves the outdoors and the thrill of traveling, she adds.
