The long wait for the Koregaon Park police station may end in 2012 as Pune Police have got the possession of land for setting up the police station. The need for police station was felt after the German Bakery blast in 2010,in which 17 persons were killed and several others injured.
It may be recalled the police station was sanctioned by the state government in 2009. But due to administrative problems for over two years,the police were struggling to get the land. Finally,in November 2011,the Pune Police got 10 gunthas of land in lane number 4,survey number 112/2 at Koregaon Park.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone II) Raghunath Khaire said it is difficult to give a time frame for setting up the station but he,however,said the it would be ready and start functioning in 2012. We have got the possession of land for Koregaon Park police station. Work is in progress, he said.
Meanwhile,the staff required for the police station has already been finalised. Inspector Shivaji Kamble has been appointed as the in-charge of the police station.
There were series of protest by residents group following the German Bakery blast demanding a police station for Koregaon Park,which is known to be a plush area in the city. There is a large presence of foreigners in this area with places such as Osho Commune International,sensitive places like the Jewish Chhabad House and several big hotels including the Taj Blue Diamond located in the area. Besides,Koregaon Park area is also known for narcotics trade in places such as the Burning Ghat. Police sources said car thefts and house break-ins are also common in Koregaon Park.
