The Pune Rural police said on Thursday that Rahul Dattatraya Handore, 28, the prime suspect in the murder of Darshana Pawar, allegedly killed her because she rejected his marriage proposal. Handore was arrested at Mumbai’s Andheri railway station late on Wednesday and had confessed to the crime, the police said.
Darshana had recently qualified for the Maharashtra forest services and her body was found at Rajgad Fort, a popular tourist and trekking spot in Pune, on Sunday. Her body had multiple injuries and was found in a partially decomposed state at the foothills of the fort.
“The victim and the accused knew each other from childhood as his home is right in front of [the house] of Darshana’s maternal uncle. They were also in touch in Pune when both of them were studying and preparing for civil services in the last few years. Prima facie, it appears that Rahul committed the murder because Darshana rejected his proposal for marriage,” Pune Rural Superintendent of Police Ankit Goyal said.
“From circumstantial evidence and information given to us by various sources, Handore became the prime suspect who had fled from the spot and gone incommunicado. We were tracking his location and he seemed to have travelled to West Bengal and Delhi. We finally nabbed him from Andheri railway station in Mumbai late night on Wednesday. He has confessed to the crime,” Goyal said.
Handore hails from Sinnar taluka in Nashik district and is a science graduate who was preparing for civil services in Pune. He stayed at Hingane Home Colony in Pune’s Karve Nagar.
Darshana, the daughter of a driver at a sugar mill in Ahmednagar, had recently cleared the Maharashtra Public Service Commission exam for the post of Range Forest Officer (RFO). She had travelled to Pune on June 9 to participate in a felicitation programme organised by a civil services coaching academy. Darshana’s speech at the event later went viral.
Both Darshana and Handore were reported missing in separate police complaints lodged by their families last week.
The police said that a detailed interrogation will reveal the real motive and sequence of events that led up to the murder.
