‘Kingpin’ in NCP corporator murder case arrested

Police have identified the suspect as Amol Vitthal Wahile (27), a resident of Wahile chawl in Mohan Nagar, Chinchwad.

Within 12 hours of the incident, the city police on Friday claimed they have arrested the kingpin in the murder case of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) corporator Avinash Chandrakant Tekawade.

Police have identified the suspect as Amol Vitthal Wahile (27), a resident of Wahile chawl in Mohan Nagar, Chinchwad.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that Wahile owns a animal farm in Mohan Nagar and is also a cable operator. There was a dispute between him and Tekawade, who was allegedly interfering in his business. Police suspect the long-standing dispute between the two the reason behind the murder.

Addressing a press conference in the city, Assistant Commissioner of Police Mohan Vidhate said that Wahile allegedly hired killers to eliminate Tekawade. Police have launched searches to arrest them, he added.

On Thursday, Tekawade had left his Ganesh Angan residence around 2 pm when the assailants attacked him with sharp weapons, leading to his death. During investigation, the police recovered a sharp weapon, footwear and a two -wheeler from the crime spot. Later, police havaldar Shakir Jenedy of Pimpri police station received a tip-off that Wahile was the alleged mastermind in the murder.

Police said Wahile, who is also a criminal on police record, was to arrive at Pune airport from Balaji on Friday morning. Accordingly, teams of Pimpri police and crime branch laid a trap and nabbed him at the airport.

Police said that Wahile hired killers, gave them instructions and left for Tirupati to show that he was not in Chinchwad on the day of the murder. Meanwhile, police produced Wahile in Morwadi court, which remanded in police custody for seven days.
