For Dr Soumya Swaminathan and her family, their father Dr M S Swaminathan was a “karma yogi” and the reward he sought was the happiness on the faces of rural and tribal men, women and children.

Swaminathan, a late Indian agricultural scientist, along with former Prime Ministers P V Narasimha Rao and Chaudhary Charan Singh will be honoured with the Bharat Ratna – India’s highest civilian award, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Friday.

“We are happy that our father Dr M S Swaminathan’s work has been recognised. His life embodies selflessness and service to humanity,” Dr Soumya Swaminathan, former chief scientist at the World Health Organisation said.

On behalf of her family, she expressed gratitude to the Government of India and Modi for having awarded the Bharat Ratna to Swaminathan posthumously.

The eldest daughter of Dr M S Swaminathan, Soumya is presently the Chairperson of the M S Swaminathan Research Foundation. She said, “The Bharat Ratna was a great honour and recognition of the work he (Swaminathan) has done throughout his life to advance science to solve the problems faced by food and nutrition security in India and in the world.”

“He was also an institution builder and a mentor to thousands of young scientists,” Soumya said, adding that he believed in using the power of science and technology to solve societal problems.

“The recognition given to him now will serve to inspire and motivate the younger generation to believe that through the thoughtful and humane use of science and technology, it is possible to solve the problems of society,” she added.
