On March 30,Kanubhai Trivedi, crusader of railway commuters’ issues and thus identified as a ‘railway hero’,will turn 81. The recent declaration by the Pune railway division to run 12-bogied Pune-Lonavala local train is a fitting birthday gift for him,as he was fighting for it for over 30 years.

For fifty years,Trivedi has been fighting for various demands of railway commuters through Pune Pravasi Sangh. One of the long pending demands was converting the Pune-Lonavala local train from a 9-bogied to a 12-bogied one so that more passengers could be accommodated.

“I consider this my birthday gift,” an elated Trivedi said. Last year, the railways declared a Pune-Nashik train, again a demand pursued by Pune Pravasi Sangh in the budget. Interestingly, its commencement also coincided with Trivedi’s birthday. He was vociferous on several issues related to railway passengers and was instrumental in starting long distance trains from Pune including Pune-Ahmedabad and the Pune-New Bhuj Ahimsa Express. Besides Ahmedabad and Nashik, the Pune Pravasi Sangh was also instrumental in starting Pune-Solapur intercity train. Trivedi had written letters to the then railway ministers Madhu Dandavate,Suresh Kalmadi and Mamata Banerjee to get some of the long distance trains from Pune started. Trivedi is involved in other social activities as a life member of organisations such as Gujrathi Shikshan Prasarak Mandali and Arya Samaj. He is a founder-president of Income Tax-Sales Tax Practitioners’ Association. Trivedi will be felicitated on Sunday at 9 am at Arya Samaj,Nana Peth.
