Joint enforcement of helmet rule in Pune Cantonment

Helmets for two-wheeler riders,including those on pillion,will be compulsory on Pune Cantonment roads from September 1 and the traffic police will join hands with the military police and army personnel to enforce the rule.

Helmets for two-wheeler riders,including those on pillion,will be compulsory on Pune Cantonment roads from September 1 and the traffic police will join hands with the military police and army personnel to enforce the rule.

“Looking at the large number of road accidents involving two-wheelers,a joint decision was taken by DCP Traffic Police and Army authorities to make helmets compulsory for both the driver and pillion rider,” said a press release issued by the Press Information Bureau,MoD.

Newsline had reported on August 1 that helmets would be made compulsory in the cantonment.

“The implementation will have to be done by police. To begin with,we are working on enforcing helmets within the Pune Cantonment. It is likely to be implemented even in Khadki,” an Army official had then said. Vishwas Pandhare,DCP (Traffic) had then said,that plan on ground zero was the responsibility of the police. He had also spoken of a detailed plan of positioning the traffic cops to keep a watch on defaulters. “It would require additional manpower,which we do not have at the moment,” he had said then.

Check posts will be set up at different places by traffic police,military police and army personnel. These places have been decided jointly by the Army authorities and the Pune traffic police. The check posts will comprise both police and Military Police wherein the Army personnel will provide help to their civil counterparts to take action on defaulters.

Use of CCTV/Video camera at these points for recording any untoward incident is also being contemplated. The policy will be in accordance with the Motor Vehicle’s Act and the direction of the Supreme Court- the release further said.
