Additional Sessions judge D R Mahajan sentenced a 28-year-old man,Pravin Barhate of Chinchwad to 18-month rigorous imprisonment for setting on fire the scooter of the father of a girl who did not reciprocate his love. After the incident in 2009,the girl had lodged a complaint with Chinchwad police station.
According to the prosecution,Barhate and the girl worked in a multinational electronics and telecommunication company in Ranjangaon and used to travel to office in the same company bus from Pune. He wanted to marry her but the girl did not respond. Fed up by his incessant calls and SMS,the girl left the job and joined another company in Bhosari. However,Barhate contionued to pursue her and also threatened her father.
The girl and her father had lodged several complaints against him but police only registered non-cognisable offences.
A day before the incident on July 9,2009,Barhate had called the girl and insisted on meeting her but she refused.

On July 9 around 5.30 am,when she came down to the parking area with her cousin to visit a temple in Khed taluka,they saw the scooter in flames and Barhate standing nearby. Barhate fled and the fire was extinguished later.
Another two-wheeler was damaged in the fire.
Police arrested Barhate on July 15,2009. He has already spent about one and half years in Yerawada jail.
Additional Public Prosecutor S B Patil examined 10 witnesses to prove the guilt of the accused.
