Mumbai-based men had obtained fresh debit card in his name from ICICI Bank
The Pune Police have arrested two Mumbai-based men for allegedly duping an IT professional to the tune of Rs 7.17 lakh by obtaining a debit card in his name. The accused have been identified as Jayesh Bhanushali (30) and Trimurti Sunivas (30),both residents of Mulund in Mumbai.
Jitendra Gopal Kanitkar (39) had lodged a complaint at the Chatushrungi police station after learning that he lost the money to the frauds between January 8 and 12.
According to the police, the accused obtained the details of Kanitkars account in ICICI bank through a social networking site.
One of the accused, using the account details, managed to clear the customer verification process at the customer care centre of ICICI Bank. The accused requested the customer care executives to change the mobile phone number on which the bank was sending SMS about transactions in Kanitkars account. With this, the accused ensured that Kanitakar will not receive further transaction details. They then placed a request for new debit card, saying that the old card has been misplaced. The accused Bhanushali prepared a bogus driving licence in the name of Kanitkar and produced it as the identity proof. The fake driving licence carried Kanitkars name and address. So it was accepted at the bank and a new debit card was issued to them.
The accused changed the PIN number of Kanitkars account. They went shopping and withdrew cash to the tune of Rs 7.17 lakh.
During investigations, the police intercepted the phone call details at the customer care centre of ICICI bank. It was revealed that the accused had made a phone call from their female friends address. Soon,a police team led by inspector Sheshrao Suryawanshi, sub inspector SAS Sayyed held the female.
Following the inputs received from her interrogation, the police nabbed the accused on Wednesday.
The police have recovered the booty worth Rs 10,400 including a debit card of Kanitkar,a duplicate licence, and mobile phones from the accused.
The police produced the accused before the Shivajinagar court on Thursday. They have been remanded to police custody till January 27.
