Irked by the absence of civic officers in meetings, corporators in the Women and Child Welfare Committee of the Pune Municipal Corporation have passed a resolution giving themselves the powers to approve an proposal that remains pending with the civic departments for more than 30 days.
The panel members had twice complained about the absence of civic officers. They had even threatened to resign if the civic administration does not address the issue. The committee had to adjourn the last two meeting because of this issue. After this, the municipal chief had directed all departments to ensure representatives for the meeting. The committee has been unhappy over the fact that the powers to implement public welfare programmes of the civic body vests with the municipal chief. Last year, they tried to get back the powers but failed.
Many proposals of corporators are sent to administration for their opinion before a final decision is taken. But the civic administration takes them lightly and do not give their opinion for long, which delays decision, said committee chairperson Vaishali Marathe.
So the committee members passed a resolution urging the civic administration to give its opinion on any proposal within 30 days failing which the committee would take decisions on the proposal, she said.
Meanwhile, the civic administration has said the powers to implement any decision is done by them. The corporators can take any decision they want, but it will be the civic administration that has to implement it. The administration has to confirm whether the decisions arewithin the powers under the BPMC Act, said civic officer.
