Former India Test batsman VVS Laxman on Sunday said that the Indian team was well set up to display a strong show in its upcoming tour of South Africa later this year. Laxman said the India A team’s exposure tour to South Africa was a good learning step and that the players would be confident when they play in the upcoming series.

In the city to inaugurate his former teammate Zaheer Khan’s restaurant Toss, the elegant right-hander,who hung up his boots last year, said,“The India A tour was a good opportunity for some of the guys to get a taste of what they will be up against. Though the conditions will not be very similar in December, this trip will still help players adjust to conditions.”

Khan, looking visibly trim after a six-week fitness training sojourn in France, said getting back into the team was his priority at the moment.

“I am really looking forward to playing the Ranji Trophy. I have always made strong comebacks into the national side and now I am looking forward to bowl as much as I can. I am excited to play in the Ranji Trophy and my goal is to get back my rhythm and take wickets,”

he said.

Laxman, who was an integral part of a strong Indian middle-order during the last tour to South Africa, gave a vote of confidence to the

relatively young batsmen

who will play the series

this time.

“I observed our batsmen closely during the Australia series. They scored big runs and looked solid in the middle, which is a good sign. Though playing in South Africa will be a challenge,I am sure our batsmen will perform well,” he said.
