In Pune, couple dies after liver transplant surgery, hospital gets notice

The Deputy Director of Health, Pune circle, Sunday issued a notice to Sahyadri Hospitals in connection with the liver transplant surgery where both the husband (recipient) and donor wife died.
Dr Nagnath Yempalle, District Civil Surgeon, who holds additional charge of Deputy Director of Health, Pune circle, told The Indian Express that they had taken cognisance of the tragic incident and issued a notice to the hospital.
“We have asked the hospital to provide details of the entire incident by Monday,” Yempalle said.
Kamini Kaomkar , 42, a resident of Hadapsar had donated a part of her liver to her husband Bapu Balkrishna Koamkar , 49, on August 15.
Bapu Koamkar, however, died on August 17 after the liver transplant operation. Kamini who had initially recovered well after donating part of her liver, according to Sahyadri hospital authorities, had however developed hypotensive shock and multi organ dysfunction which could not be controlled even with advanced treatment.

They reiterated that surgeries were carried out strictly as per medical protocols.
On Sunday authorities at Sahyadri hospitals issued another statement stating that they have received the notice from the Deputy director.
“Our deepest condolences go out to the family during this difficult time. Yes, we have received the notice from the Deputy Director and are fully cooperating with the investigation. We are committed to providing all necessary information and support to ensure a thorough review of this matter,” as per the statement.

Kamini died within five days of her husband’s death. According to Kamini’s brother Balraj Wadekar, she died on August 22. Kamini’s body was sent to Sassoon General Hospital and relatives are now waiting for the post mortem report.
“This is a medico -legal case and we will be submitting the findings of the report to the police,” Dr Yellapa Jadhav, medical superintendent at Sassoon General Hospital said.
Wadekar claimed that his sister was a healthy donor and relatives are baffled regarding her death. “We have approached the police in this matter and are waiting for the post mortem report,”he said.
As a preliminary step, an accidental death report has been recorded at Deccan Gymkhana Police station as the family member of the deceased approached us.

Whenever medical negligence is alleged, a medical board comprising competent authorities from the state-run Sassoon General Hospital is formed and conducts an inquiry.
“ When this board submits a report, an FIR may be registered based on the findings. In cases where the committee finds medical negligence, it becomes the starting point of our investigation,” said an officer from Deccan Gymkhana police station.
