A month-long drive to check illegal sex selection led to the sealing of as many as 190 sonography and 302 medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) centres across Maharashtra. Dr A Khade,nodal officer in charge of the state PC-PNDT cell,told Newsline on Tuesday that as many as 5,841 sonography centres were inspected from June 5,and of the 190 centres sealed,83 were in Mumbai,36 in Nashik,13 in Nagpur and 10 in Hingoli.

The drive was necessitated after female foetuses were unearthed in Beed district where it was alleged that doctor couple Dr Sudam and Saraswati Munde were involved in sex selective abortions. It had been alleged that foetuses were dumped behind their hospital. The couple is now in police custody.
