In a month,190 sonography & 302 MTP centres sealed in state

A month-long drive to check illegal sex selection led to the sealing of as many as 190 sonography and 302 medical termination of pregnancy centres across Maharashtra

A month-long drive to check illegal sex selection led to the sealing of as many as 190 sonography and 302 medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) centres across Maharashtra. Dr A Khade, nodal officer in charge of the state PC-PNDT cell, told Newsline on Tuesday that as many as 5,841 sonography centres were inspected from June 5,and of the 190 centres sealed,83 were in Mumbai,36 in Nashik,13 in Nagpur and 10 in Hingoli.

The drive was necessitated after female foetuses were unearthed in Beed district where it was alleged that doctor couple Dr Sudam and Saraswati Munde were involved in sex selective abortions. It had been alleged that foetuses were dumped behind their hospital. The couple is now in police custody.

While the entire state machinery has been activated to check these malpractices,high-level meetings involving chief secretary Jayant Banthia and others resulted in day-to-day monitoring of sonography and MTP centres in the state. Of the 3,369 MTP centres inspected,302 have been de-recognised including 97 from Thane,41 from Brihan Mumbai corporation,23 from Jalna and 24 from Akola.

Meanwhile, based on complaints received on website and the helpline launched by the state government to save the girl child,Khade said a total of 24 sonography machines were sealed. “From August last year,we received 272 complaints on the website,of which 103 were resolved. As many as 11 sonography machines were sealed, particularly for non-maintenance of medical records. There were 254 complaints registered on the helpline,of which 210 were resolved and 14 sonography machines were sealed,” he added.
