For the first time, the All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD) has selected over 70 chemists from across the country to attend the International Pharmaceutical Federation’s global conference from September 24-28 at Brisbane, Australia.

Jagannath Shinde, President of AIOCD told The Indian Express that this was an important exercise towards setting up an education model for pharmacists. “We plan to visit various pharmacies in Australia and understand how the general public health of our societies can be improved,” Shinde said.

There are approximately 20 lakh chemists across the country and four lakh in Maharashtra. The delegation is led by Shinde. The 81st FIP (International Pharmaceutical Federation)’s world Congress of pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences aims to transform pharmacy, improve patient care and work towards patient-pharmacist relationships as the key to the future.

The FIP is a global body with more than 4 million pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists who work together to meet the world’s healthcare needs. Shinde pointed out that no single country could beat challenges by their own; hence, gathering together at this global conference would provide a deep dive into innovative solutions. “There are many pressing health related problems – be it from pandemic preparedness financing to priority-setting for self care and universal health coverage. Patients and communities deserve sustainable care that is accessible,” according to a readout from FIP.

The occasion also holds significance as chemists will celebrate the World Pharmacy Day on September 25. According to Shinde, the aim is to address challenges in the health sector by being well informed about the changes occurring globally. This year the international theme is ‘Pharmacy Strengthening Health Systems’ and Shinde will be delivering a lecture at the global event. Anil Navandar, Secretary of Maharashtra State Chemists and Druggists Association, said several programmes have been organised on the occasion.
