ILS global meet on feminism & law tomorrow

The women's studies center of ILS Law College will organise an international conference on 'Feminism and the law: revisiting the past,rethinking the present,thinking the way forward'.

The women’s studies center of ILS Law College will organise an international conference on ‘Feminism and the law: revisiting the past,rethinking the present,thinking the way forward’. The conference is part of a series of events to be held in honour of renowned jurist SP Sathe,the former principal of ILS.

More than 30 delegates from 15 countries are expected to participate in the conference to be inaugurated on February 10. Around 100 Indian delegates will be present at the conference. Speaking about the conference,Jaya Sagade,vice-principal,ILS,said,“We organise a conference every year but it is for the first time that we will be organising an international conference. We will see participation from countries like Australia,Canada,Congo,Indonesia,Japan,Lebanon,Mauritius,Netherlands,Nigeria,South Africa,Sri Lanka,Turkey,United Kingdom and the United States.”

The conference will see talks by experts such as Justic Prabha Sridevan,Rosemary Hunter,Margaret Thornton,Flavia Agnes,Manisha Gupte,Ratna Kapur and Pushpa Bhave. The aim of the conference is to explore how women’s experiences have been structured,impacted,controlled or ignored by the law,the challenges posed by globalisation,militarism and fundamentalism to the law and legal structures and possibilities and limits of realising women’s rights through law. The conference is being supported by the Indian Council of Social Science Research,National Commission for Women and the University Grants Commission.
