Human rights activist calls for free and fair elections in Bangladesh

Bangladesh is undergoing an unprecedented crisis with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina having resigned and the death toll having risen to over 440 in the anti-government protests – as per recent reports.

“Apart from protecting the human rights of the minorities, the country’s democracy, good governance, and anti-corruption movement for freedom is not new. For the last 15 years, online posts, comments, and at various UN forum meetings, we have continued to highlight the truth and recently supported the student movement last July to advance the protection of human rights,” Ahmed said.

“There are more challenges, as we need to bring back the transparency and purity of the constitution,” he said, adding that it was vital to organise a truly free and fair election in Bangladesh. “We need to ensure social safety and security as there are some mischievous elements that are causing all this violence,” he appealed.

Ahmed who also belongs to Bangladesh’s Social Alliance said that it was important to keep traffic systems on track and also initiate and complete the trial into cases of money laundering and human rights violations during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure as Prime Minister. “We want to make Bangladesh corruption-free, with an independent judiciary and ensure good governance for all,” he said.
