The state minister for transport Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil on Monday said that the home delivery of driving licences in Pune as well as in other parts of the state will start in May. The RTO authorities have finalised a deal with the postal department for the delivery of licences. The postal department has offered special discount to the RTO for the services. This follows an announcement made to this effect two months ago by the state transport department.
Vikhe Patil said that along with the driving licence, the plan also includes home delivery of vehicle registration papers.
We have completed the groundwork for the plan of providing driving licences at home. In all probability,we will roll out the plan in May. We will try and implement it from May 1,the foundation day of Maharashtra. Not only driving licences, but we are also planning to provide the vehicle registration papers via post. Thirdly the online payment of vehicle tax is also being rolled out from the next month, Vikhe-Patil told Newsline.
“Initially, the state wanted the Pune RTO to take a lead in this and first implement the plan in Pune alone and based on the results, implement it other parts of the state. We had also shown willingness to this, but later on,it was decided that the plan should come into force across the state all at once, Pune RTO Chandrakant Kharatmal said.
We have had talks with the postal department regarding this and considering that they will be delivering in bulk ,they have offered us concessional rates. Therefore,we did not consider any other private agencies and courier services that were also willing to explore the opportunities, Kharatmal said.
This move will also help in curbing some malpractices as most of the vehicles used in terror activities were either stolen or were registered under fictitious names. Therefore it has now been decided to send the vehicle registration documents as well as driving licences by post.
This will be done on the lines of the delivery of passports by post by the passport department, the minister said.
