HEAVY rainfall in the last few months has delayed the completion of temporary bus terminus being set up by the MahaMetro at Aarey field in Wakdewadi for Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC).
The Shivajinagar station of MSRTC, one of the two most busy traffic hubs in the city, will shift to the Aarey field temporarily to facilitate development of new integrated transport location at its present location in Shivajinagar.
The work was supposed to be completed several months ago, but the deadline was extended after the work being done by MahaMetro failed to catch speed. In September, Metro officials had said that the work will be finished and shifting will happen before Diwali. However, continuous rain led to delays. Incomplete work has prevented MSRTC from starting bus services from the new location.
The MSRTC, however, had started operation of Diwali special trips from the new location. Officials said it would take around a month to conduct 1,000-odd daily trips from Wakdewadi.
The Metro has proposed to set up a state-of-the-art bus depot at the present location and a Metro station will also be built. Currently, the Shivajinagar ST stand occupies 15,700 square metre and the bus stand, workshop and ST office operate from the stand.
MSRTC has agreed to provide 3,185 square metre of MahaMetro space for the Metro rail work. “The work is almost complete now. Some finishing work is left which will be completed in a few days,” said an official with MahaMetro.
The MSRTC Pune division had proposed three locations — Sinchan Nagar at Range Hills, the Government Hatchery at Wakdewadi (Mula Road) and the College of Engineering Pune or SSPMS College Ground — for the makeshift bus stand.
The Mula Road location was finalised due to the availability of land.
