Columbia Asia Hospital has started a special cosmetology clinic at Kharadi for those seeking aesthetic treatment. Within the growing upper middle-class in the city,there is a rising consciousness about cosmetic procedures aimed at treating skin disorders and improving facial features,which until recently,were considered a luxury. However,an increased consciousness about appearance,the cosmetic procedures have become more acceptable. At his clinic,plastic surgeon Sanjay Joshi gives insight into liposuction or tummy tuck,breast augmentation or cosmetic reshaping,eye brow lift,hair transplant and other cosmetic corrections.

Better Relief

Department of Physiotherapy,Bharati Hospital,held a workshop on integrative manual therapy utilising Strain Counter Strain Techniques (SCST) on October 5 and 6. SCST is part of manual therapy,which will work on autonomic nervous system dysfunction and related disorders that are not possible with the available Mulligan or Maitland techniques. The SCST technique will be helpful for treating backache,migraine,cervicogenic headache,vision dysfunction and auditory dysfunction. This approach utilises a trigger point,which is accumulation of lactic acid,with other manual therapy approaches. “The physiotherapy department of Bharati Hospital is the first to introduce this technique to Pune,” says SK Lalwani,Vice-Principal and Medical Director of BVDU Medical College & Hospital.

Knowledge Refresh

ENT Department at Command Hospital,Pune,conducted a continuous medical education (CME) on “Current Trends and Recent Advances in ENT” on October 5 and 6. Air Marshal B Keshav Rao,Director and Commandant of Armed Forces Medical College,was the chief guest at the function. Diagnosis and management of various ENT disorders has undergone a sea change over the last decade. This CME provided a comprehensive approach to covering different topics such as recent advances in sub-specialties such as otology,rhinology,neuro-otology,lateral skull base surgery and endoscopic surgery. The CME also had a live surgical demonstration by some of the ENT surgeons.

Against Discrimination

Bank of Maharashtra conducted a programme to create awareness on gender discrimination for women employees,under Mahabank Women Empowerment (Swashakti),at its head office in the city. The programme was inaugurated by Renu Gavaskar,Director of Eklavya. Senior inspector Bhanupratap Barge spoke on “Self Protection for Women – Awareness of Law”,while management consultant Prakash Bhatt delivered a lecture on “Issues of Women at Workplace – A Long Journey & Legislative Measures”.

Saving Lives


With more than 6,60,000 deaths occurring every year in India as a result of SCA,the survival rate is less than 1 per cent as emergency medical services do not reach on time. To tackle the situation,Phillips Healthcare announced the installation of over 950 Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) across metros in the country. An AED is a portable device that can automatically diagnose a Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) and help save life. Each AED comes with audio and visual instructions for its operation and can be used without formal training.

Bone Health

A Physiotherapy Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine Clinic was inaugurated at R P Arcade,East Street. Ali Irani,former physiotherapist of the Indian cricket team and HOD of Nanavati Hospital Mumbai,has trained Zahra Shirazi of Ruby Hall Clinic. The centre specialises in manual therapy,dry needling,woman’s health and ergonomics among other therapies.
