Government attempts to encourage organ donation got a shot in the arm as Governor K Sankaranarayan has directed the vice-chancellors of various varsities to motivate students to display organ donor stickers on the identity cards. Almost a year ago,the health department had issued a slew of resolutions to encourage organ donation.

In a meeting held recently, the governor had urged the V-Cs to offer a separate column in the college admission forms for organ donation. T C Benjamin,Additional Chief Secretary (public health) said filling the column is not mandatory and students will have the choice. The state had made it a must for hospitals to inform the organ transplant centres about brain-dead patients. From September 2012 to August 31,2013,111 brain deaths have been declared,of which kin of 40 patients have agreed to donate organs.

A total of 139 persons received organs,of which 69 got kidney,26 got liver, and th rest got eyes and skin. Ninety-five hospitals have been recognised as organ transplant and retrieval centres and 26 have been identified as non-transplant retrieval centres. “We have received 189 applications and our teams will inspect before registering them as non-transplant organ retrieval centres,” Benjamin said.

Increasing cases of diabetes in India has led more cases of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Health officials say 30-40 per cent of diabetics have CKD. Relatives and family donate kidneys to their family members but there is a great deal of hesitation when it comes to donating organs of deceased patients.

Licences with organ donor label being issued

In bid to boost organ donation, the Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) have started a campaign in Mumbai and Pune.

In Mumbai, the RTO has issued 708 driving licences stamped with an organ donor label in just 45 days.

Samir Dua,founder of the Gift Your Organ Foundation that is part of the green heart drivers’ licence campaign, said anybody who applies for a licence will be given a form if he or she wants to pledge their organs.

If they agree, licences will be attached with a green heart organ donor sticker. The drive will start soon in Pune, said Anil Valiv Deputy RTO,Pune.
