Chandigarhs Sujjan Singh and Delhi’s Himmat Singh Rai ended the third and penultimate round of the PGTI Players Championship at the Oxford Golf and Country Club tied on eight-under 208,three strokes ahead of the competition. Their closest challengers going into Friday’s final round are Bangalore’s Abhishek Jha and Delhi’s Shamim Khan,both on five-under 211.Sujjan,who began the day in eighth place,carded a bogey-free 67,with five birdies including a 35-foot putt on the 18th. Meanwhile,round one leader Himmat put an ordinary round two behind him to card a four-under 68.The highlight of the day,however,came from Jha,who shot from his overnight 25th to joint third after compiling an eight-under 64 and setting a new course record,bettering Anirban Lahiri’s effort last year by a stroke.
Biniwale,Chaphekar win titles in tennis tourney Martand Biniwale and Deepti Chaphekar bagged the men’s and women’s titles at the Le Meridien-Players Cup district ranking table tennis tournament at Deccan Gymkhana on Thursday. Chaphekar recovered from two games down to defeat top seed Sayali Deshpande in a seven-game women’s final,while Biniwale kept out a determined Tanay Shinde over six hard-fought games.
