An overall 22 per cent price rise over the last six months has acted as a dampener for gold purchases ahead of Akshay Tritiya (April 22), considered an auspicious occasion to buy gold. The jewellers in Pune are not optimistic about the business this year.

Since December last year, gold prices have been on the rise both in domestic and international markets. Currently, 10 gm of gold is sold between Rs 59,000 and Rs 62,000 in Pune. The price was even higher earlier this week but came down marginally due to a pullback in the US dollar and bond yield.

Amit Modak, chief executive officer (CEO) of Pune-headquartered jewellers chain P N Gadgil and Sons, said high price is the main reason for the market reporting lower volumes in gold sales. “For the last month or so, we have seen even the regular buying for marriages has stopped. The high price is the only reason,” he said. Many have put brakes on their gold purchase plans in the hope of prices softening a bit. Modak said as marriage dates came nearer, people came out to buy gold.
