Five days after Shivajinagar police filed a case of rape against 23-year-old Ajit Gawade, deputy sarpanch of Takli Haji village in Shirur and grandson of former MLA Popatrao Gawade, the complainant girl in the case has attempted suicide by taking sleeping pills.
The girl has given a statement to the police at the hospital that she was being threatened by Gawade and some others after the case was registered.
The 22-year-old girl, who works as a nursing assistant at a hospital in Pune, had approached the Shivajinagar police on March 10 saying Ajit Gawade had physical relations with her after making false promises of marriage. She also alleged he had made a video clip of her and threatened to circulate it. The two had met in college a few years ago, the police said.

Gawade has been on the run ever since the complaint under Indian Penal Code section 376 (Rape) was filed against him. Shivajinagar police have formed a team to nab him.
As per information given by Vishrantwadi police station, the girl had gone to her uncle’s house in Vishrantwadi. On Tuesday night, she had dinner with her relatives. Some time later, she reportedly took the sleeping pills. She was rushed to a private hospital, where she is currently being treated.
Senior inspector P N Supekar, in charge of Vishrantwadi police station, said, “The girl is now out of danger. We have recorded her statement. She has told us she was being threatened after the complaint was registered against Gawade. She has written a suicide note. We will probe more details after the family members hand us over the suicide note. Arrests will be made in the case after the probe.”
Senior inspector N V Jadhav of Shivajinagar police station, where the rape complaint was registered, said, “We are looking for Gawade and working on some leads.”
According to police, Gawade comes from a politically influential family from Shirur in Pune district. His grandfather was the MLA from Shirur while his mother and aunt currently hold key positions in Panchayat Samiti of Shirur.
