Nearly 3 years after girl drowned inside water pit in Pimpri Chinchwad, FIR lodged against contractor

In July 2022, Tapasi Siraswal fell into a water pit on the premises of Bindra Industries Company and died. The pit had been dug for the construction of a lift.

Nearly three years after a two-and-a-half-year-old girl died by drowning in a water pit on the premises of a private company in Pimpri Chinchwad, an offence has been registered against a contractor for his alleged negligence that led to the incident.

Assistant Police Inspector Rakesh Gumane lodged the FIR in this case at the Mahalunge MIDC police station on Thursday.

As per the FIR, on July 17, 2022, around 3.30 pm, a girl identified as Tapasi Sonu Siraswal fell into a water pit on the premises of Bindra Industries Company, located at Nighoje village in Khed taluka of Pune district.

The police said Siraswal’s father worked as a watchman at the company. A pit was dug on the premises for the construction of a lift, but the contractor, Vishal Sonawane, allegedly did not take essential precautions like covering the pit or fencing it.

Sonawane has been booked under Section 304 (a) (death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code.

According to the police, the girl was playing around the pit when water accumulated in it. She slipped and died by drowning.

After receiving information, the police reached the spot. An accidental death report was lodged by the Pimpri Chinchwad police, and an investigation was initiated to confirm the cause of the incident.

Senior Police Inspector Nitin Gite of Mahalunge MIDC police station said the parents of the deceased girl had initially stated they did not want to file any complaint in this case. “But they filed a complaint recently. So an FIR has been registered based on the findings of an inquiry into this incident,” he said.
