Even as Maharashtra minister Girish Mahajan said it was not possible to give Kunbi caste certificates to all Marathas, quota activist Manoj Jarange-Patil has threatened to make the clip in which the minister had purportedly made the promise viral.

”When I was on fast-unto-death, Girish Mahajan came to meet me on behalf of the government. He then promised that the government would provide Kunbi certificates to all Marathas… If he is denying that, then I will make the clip viral,” Jarange-Patil told reporters during his tour of northern Maharashtra Monday.

Jarange-Patil’s reaction came a day after Mahajan told reporters in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar that providing Kunbi caste certificates to all Marathas would be difficult.

”When Jarange-Patil was on a hunger strike, I met him. I then told him that providing Kunbi certificates to all Marathas would not be possible. We can provide Kunbi certificates only to those whose records have been found or those who possess the records. The government has decided to this effect. But if we have to provide Kunbi certificates to all the Marathas, then the question is under which law or rule we can do so.”

Mahajan said he had met Jarange-Patil four times during his fast. ”We are in favour of the Maratha community getting reservation. I had told Jarange-Patil on the stage where he was fasting,” he added.

Jarange-Patil has been insisting that all Marathas should get Kunbi certificates. He has given time till December 24 to the government to ensure that the Maratha community gets reservations. “After that, we will not give the government even one more day…The government will find it difficult to tackle the Marathas after the December 24 deadline is over,” he has been saying at press conferences and rallies.
