Around 60 students belonging to various courses in the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) held a protest on the college premises against the lack of adequate infrastructure and hostel facilities. The FTII authorities, however, have clarified that problems of students will be addressed by the end of this year.
Two new courses have been introduced this year, but 35 percent students from each batch cannot avail the hostel facility because of shortage of rooms although all its courses are residential courses, said Samarth Dixit, president,FTII students association, who is in the second year of editing course. Dixit also complained that sometimes students of different courses have to share facilties as their project-slots clash with each other.
Prakash Magdum, registrar,FTII,said, the institute is coming up with a new hostel building with 70 rooms that will be ready by December. We hope that all students will be accommodated after this building is ready, he said.
Earlier in the morning, students lodged their protest against upgradation of FTII to international level saying that it was an attempt of privatise the institute.
The students have taken the upgradation project as an attempt to privatise the institute. But it is not so and the upgradation is taking place in consultation with FTII alumni, representatives of film industry and in consultation with the present students of the institute, Magdum said.
