Even as the strike by students of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) entered its 83rd day on Wednesday, Sunil Gokhale, a city-based lawyer and great grandson of freedom fighter Gopal Krishna Gokhale, has filed a “complaint” with the institute, seeking replies on the criteria used to appoint TV actor Gajendra Chauhan as the FTII society president and others as its members.

Gokhale (47), who says he has filed the complaint under the Citizens Charter, has also sent a copy of the same to the Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry, which has been talking to students to end the strike.

“I have been following the strike quite closely. It’s been more than two months. Many prominent people, including a delegation from the I&B Ministry, visited the institute, but nothing concrete has happened so far. Those who are losing due to the strike are students. I realised that so far, no one has filed a written complaint regarding the matter. For the government to act, there must be a complaint. The complaint is to get a written reply from the FTII Society so that we understand its and the government’s thought process,” says Gokhale, adding that he was open to approaching a higher forum and even courts if the FTII deadlock was not resolved.

The lawyer says though he has met the FTII students to understand their concerns, his complaint did not follow on a request or instigation of the students.

In his nine-page complaint, Gokhale has raised sought to know “who is a person of eminence” and has questioned the credentials of Gajendra Chauhan as also the appointment of Anagha Ghaisas, Narendra Pathak and Rahul Solapurkar as FTII society members. “Why has there been no efforts made to end the strike? Why label students as anti-national, anti-Hindu and Naxals? Is it justified to file a police complaint and jail the students,” his complaint says.
When contacted, Prashant Patharbe, director of FTII, instructed the reporter to contact the registrar, who couldn’t be reached for a comment.
