Four students of the pharmacy college run by Jaiwant Shikshan Prasarak Mandal (JSPM) Institute in Tathawade were feared drowned in the reservoir of the Pavana dam near Lonavala on Sunday.
The students had went to the dam for a picnic. One of the bodies was fished out by Sunday evening while the search for three more is on.
Lonavala rural police said the four had come to the reservoir with five others on their bikes. Sometime around afternoon, one of them entered the waters and started drowning as he could not judge the currents.
The other three jumped to rescue him, but all four drowned.
Assistant inspector Pradeep Kale of Lonavala rural police station said one of the bodies was fished out around 5 pm.
The search operation was suspended after dark around 7 pm and would resume in the early hours of Monday.
Police have identified the four as Nikhil Yevle, Kiran Ahamkare, Shubham Mulay and Aakash Sonawane, all aged 19.
S L Bhilare, Director, JSPM Tathawade campus, said, “There were nine students who had gone for the trip on their bikes.
Their internal exams had ended on Friday and they wanted to celebrate. Eight were from the pharmacy college and one was from the engineering college.
The four missing students are from the pharmacy college. Out of the four, Yevle was from Akola, Ahamkare and Sonawane were from Pune, while Mulay was from Beed.”
