CIVIC activists have criticised the PMC’s plan of building five foot overbridges (FOBs) on the Nagar Road BRTS corridor. “The latest plan to build five FOBs on Nagar Road BRTS corridor is nothing but an attempt to divert attention and resort to knee jerk tactics for having rolled out the BRTS in haste. Such a plan cannot be considered unless all the surveys and reports are in place,” said Qaneez Sukhrani of Nagari Chetna Manch.
“Through this proposal that was placed before the GB, the focus would shift from the main issue i.e. rectification of the root causes on the existing infrastructure and make safety measures water-tight. Edge-to-edge completion of the entire BRTS infrastructure would be forgotten and the end result would be chaos on Nagar Road,” Sukhrani added.
“Further, it is highly doubtful as to whether it is possible to complete five FOBs in 45 days as claimed by the mayor, and then remove them when Metro work starts on Nagar Road,” Sukhrani further said.
Sukhrani said the survey must be made by an expert agency on the feasibility of the project to first justify the need for FOBs. “The DPR should be prepared taking into account pre-feasibility and feasibility aspects. In-depth survey on footfalls of two sets of subways on Nagar Road created under JNNURM as compared to pedestrians darting across the road at the same place should be studied,” the activist said.
