At the Ghorpadi railway crossing, you will notice traffic wardens struggling to streamline the road traffic — a sight which is common at the other railway stations. As the iron girders block the traffic way, there is a huge stagnation of traffic at both ends, which gets unruly as these girders go up once again.

This scenario holds true for any time of the day. The situation worsens during morning and evening hours. Wardens or no wardens, these bottleneck roads and traffic snarls continue to be a nuisance to commuters.

A proposal to raise a flyover at the crossing has also been mooted years ago. However, since three government establishments including the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC),Central Railway (CR) and Defense Ministry, are involved in the matter, nothing has materialised so far.

The traffic problem led Bharat Forge to appoint traffic wardens,to control the traffic to some extent. A year and half back,Bharat Forge developed this stretch of road at both the ends of the crossing.

“Roads at both the ends of the crossing are very narrow, leading to traffic congestions. Students cannot reach in time; patients in the ambulances have to suffer. Once the gates are open, people rush like they are mad. Therefore,we had appointed traffic wardens to control them is some way, however, sometimes commuters also beat them up,” Col Pratap Chavan of Bharat Forge, who has been trying to bring together the three involved bodies together for finding a solution.

He said,“PMC had prepared a proposal to construct a flyover that will be bifurcated into ‘Y’ shape. If this bridge comes up,all the traffic woes will come to an end. However, the matter is pending for years, perhaps because the defense authorities are demanding an alternate land in lieu of the land.”

Vasant Dikhale, traffic warden who manages the traffic at the Crossing 68 said,“The gate has to be closed for more than forty times as the same number of trains pass by this point between 8 am and 4 pm itself. After that as well, trains keep on passing. In addition, there are no less than five goods trains that pass by. The traffic snarls are rampant between 7 am and 11 am and between 5 pm and 10 pm.” A railway official said that the CR had already given a no-objection to the proposal of bridges. “However, the defence authorities should allot the land for carrying out the construction activity and PMC has to construct the gradients of these bridges. The railway administration will build a top portion of the flyover or a bridge,” the official said.
