The police and election officials seized Rs 20 lakh from a BJP candidate’s car at a toll booth in Rajgurunagar on Thursday.

Khed police said during a check carried by the flying squad, as per the directives of the election commission, cash in denominations of Rs 500 was seized from a multi-utility vehicle of the BJP candidate from Ambegaon constituency, Jaisingh Erande, at 1 am.

Inspector R V Ingawale of Khed police station said, “We found flags, banners, stickers and posters of BJP along with the cash. Erande’s driver and son Sagar were in the car when the cash was seized. They only said that it was being brought from Mumbai. They later said the cash was from sale of potatoes to some traders in Mumbai, but they did not have any receipt to support their claim.”

Police sub-inspector Mukhtar Shaikh, who is now probing the case, said, “On Thursday afternoon, Erande produced some receipts, which he claimed were of the transaction of potato sale. Income tax department officials have initiated investigation. Based on their report further action will be taken.”

Erande said, “This was not illegal cash. We sold potatoes to traders in Mumbai, and this money was the payment for it. We have receipts to support it.”

Resident district collector of Pune Suresh Jadhav said, “A report is awaited on the case. If it found that the seized cash is unaccounted, a case will be registered.”
