Five women were killed and 19 persons seriously injured after a jeep collided head-on with a truck on Kalyan-Ahmednagar road at Vatkhale village in the wee hours of Wednesday.
Otur police said that the jeep was heading from Vikhroli towards Chansarodi village when it collided head-on with the truck loaded with onions,which was heading towards agricultural produce marketing committee office at Vashi in Navi Mumbai. The truck turned turtle and fell down in the fields.
Police said the women had gone to Vikhroli to attend a family function.
Those injured were first taken to a hospital in Ale Phata and then to Yeshwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital in Pimpri. Police identified the deceased women as Sunanda Ashok Bhor (45),Manda Pandharinath Bhor (52),Shantabai Tukaram Chaskar (40) all residents of Chasnarodi,Asha Shantaram Muluk (45) of Giravli village and Sharada Vilas Awate (50) of Ambegaon.
