Police Saturday said a probe into a PMPML bus conductor in Bhosari using unauthorised electronic ticket issuing machine (ETIM) last week has come to a standstill due to ‘non-cooperation’ from Vansh Infotech Pvt Ltd — the firm that supplies ETIMs to the public transport utility.

A cheating case has been registered against PMPML conductor Pradip Kavthale and Vansh Infotech employee Sandip Kale for allegedly siphoning off Rs 1,700 from the transport utility. Both the accused have been suspended and are currently out on bail.

“We need official confirmation on the non-authenticity of ETIM found with the conductor to ascertain facts. We first approached PMPML authorities, who in turn asked us to contact Vansh Infotech Pvt Ltd. Till date,we have not received any response from the firm despite approaching them on the second day after the complaint was registered,” Senior Inspector with MIDC Bhosari police station,DB Patil told Newsline.

Rahul Madhekar, assistant project manager with the aforesaid firm said he was not aware any formal approach from police regarding ascertaining the authenticity of ETIM used during crime. “We need to check our records,” he said.

When asked why the transport utility was not pressuring the firm to cooperate with police on investigation,PMPML traffic manager Sunil Gavali said,“The police, after much resistance, have registered our complaint. It is their job to investigate,” he said.

Reacting on the issue,PMPML’s joint managing director,Pravin Ashtikar said he would ensure the guilty get punished.

PMPML has come across complaints on tampering with ETIMs. No concrete action has been taken in any of those cases with an inquiry believed to be pending. Vansh Infotech Pvt Ltd,provides more than 1,000 ETIMs to the transport utility. Associated with allegations of misappropriation of ticket-money and poor functioning of ETIMs,civic activists have stepped up their demand to black-list the firm.

Activists, who have been alleging PMPML authorities for backing Vansh Infotech despite being allegedly involved in irregularities have demanded that charges be framed against the top authorities of the firm. “Charges should be framed against the top brass of the firm,” civic activist Jugal Rathi said. PMPML to conduct software, hardware checks on firm PMPML’s joint managing director,Pravin Ashtikar said plans to carry out a thorough software and hardware check up of equipment provided by Vansh Infotech Pvt Ltd,including ETIMs was on. “The firm had undergone testing from Standardisation Testing and Quality Certification (STQC) Directorate in the past, and is believed to have addressed the query pointed out during the check,” he said.
