An agarbatti (incense stick) manufacturing factory in Pandharkar Nagar, Akurdi in Pune caught fire on Tuesday, officials with PCMC Fire Brigade said. About 400 students and staff members from Beena English Medium School were vacated as a precautionary measure.

The fire from the factory spread to a neighbouring bakery and a tea powder storage facility.
“We got a call at about 10 am. Before we reached, half the facility was on fire. As the work began, the fire soon engulfed the entire factory and the adjacent bakery,” said Pratap Chavan, Sub-Officer, Pimpri Fire Station.

Chavan said that nine firetenders from Pimpri and Pradhikaran fire stations were deployed to douse the fire which kept reigniting due to inflammatory material and chemicals.
Senior Inspector Vishwajeet Khule, in-charge of Nigdi police station said, “No casualties were reported in the fire. As a precautionary measure, students from an adjacent school were evacuated. We have filed a fire incident report and a probe has been launched into the causes.”
