Jitendra Vijay Bhopale, also known as Magician Raghuvir, will perform with his 74-year-old father Vijay Raghuvir and his son Ishaan Raghuvir across four different locations on May 19, 25 and 26. The show on May 26 will mark the 16,000th show of all three generations of the family.
The persona of Magician Raghuvir was started in 1948 by Jitendra’s grandfather Raghuvir Bhopale, who learnt the art of magic from Rajasthani magician Rana. Eighty six years ago, Magician Raghuvir performed his first commercial magic show, which made him Maharashtra’s first successful commercial magician.
Jitendra Vijay Bhopale, 46, also known as Jitendra Raghuvir, grandson of Magician Raghuvir, is an engineer by profession from Kothrud, Pune. He gave his first performance on a song called ‘ala ala jadugar’ at the age of five.
He would accompany his father Vijay Raghuvir on his magic shows and tours during his summer and winter holidays. He graduated from College of Engineering in Pune. He then moved to USA for his MS Mechanical post graduate degree but returned in 2006 to pursue his passion for magic He worked at TATA telecom in Hinjewadi while pursuing his magical shows on the side and left his job in 2012 after his father retired from the profession to continue the family legacy. He has performed in 28 countries including USA, Canada, Australia and UAE.
“My grandfather, father and I used to curate all the magical tricks at home. I used to accompany my father on his tours. This kept me close to the art and helped me pursue it to the full.” said Jitendra.
The Raghuvir family has made sure they educate the audiences about the ‘magic’ they do. While talking to The Indian Express he said, “Modern magic is purely based on science, technology and geometry. My family has made sure that the audience enjoy the art and science of magic to its fullest and not perceive it as a part of any superstition or witchcraft.”
In 1960, The School of Magic in Pune was started by Magician Raghuvir Bhopale to educate people about the art not just here, but abroad as well. While on tour, Jitendra Raghuvir interacts with people and conducts workshops to create awareness among people. He said, “We teach them various types of magic such as street , closeup and stage magic not just in Pune, but abroad as well.”
“I will be performing with my team consisting of 10 people including my son Ishaan Bhopale, 15, my daughter Taneesha Bhopale,10, and my niece as well for this milestone show .” Said Jitendra Raghuvir. The show will run for 2 hours with 50 plus illusions. Some tricks such as cutting a lady in half, fight with a dinosaur, levitation, compressing man, handkerchief dance and a magic trick related to The Avengers.
